weird meh horror-mystery book with the biggest twist of all time

here is the book i got

This is what I can best describe as an outdated-scifi-horror-detective-police investigation book from the

70's that I now find out also has a movie (I have to say, the movie is far better!!)

(here is some images from the movie!)

Anyway, the book is very short and I don't want to spoil the book for the plot twist of

all the times at the end, but what I want to criticize is how many people is in the book. I just want to say that there are way too many POVs.

We have the main subject mary and her mother (these are the most important) then we have secondary characters like:

  • a researcher and a doctor
  • reporter
  • the board of the orphanage (all of whom are named)
  • the buss officer
  • More police investigators with forgettable names
  • Two people out in the field
  • Chief of Police
  • Wife of police chief (that is suprisingly important
  • I don't mind many characters, but this becomes too much to hold on to when you're unsure how relevant they will

be to the rest of the story. The man who gets the main confrontation of "The Big Bad" was a random police detective that
we (or at least I) have no knowledge of. I think that the lack of a clear protagonist made the book more confusing, because after we go from the
perspective of the two doctors, we jump between different people with varying improtance to the story. Anyway, I think the book
could have been a clear main character, or at least cut down on names for people who weren't important (it makes things a little easier)
I think that this also did not help with the fact that the book was translated from English and into Norwegian, English names
settle worse in my head when the rest is in Norwegian, this may have something to do with that matter.

final thoughts: forgettable book with unforgettable ending
